Keys don't usually break without warning signs. Metal fatigue from years of use, an already-binding cylinder, ice expanding inside an outdoor lock during a rare San Antonio-area cold snap, or simply the wrong angle of force applied at the wrong moment — any of these can cause a key to shear and leave the tip lodged in the keyway. The challenge isn't just removing the fragment; it's doing so in a way that doesn't score the cylinder walls, damage the wafer or pin stack, or leave debris that will cause the lock to malfunction afterward. That's why the type of lock involved matters enormously. A residential door knob lock on a hollow-core entry door has very different tolerances than a heavy-duty commercial mortise lock installed in a metal storefront frame, and an automotive ignition cylinder has different considerations again.
A mortise lock — common in older Helotes homes, historic commercial buildings, and many multi-family properties along FM 1560 — is a particularly important case. The cylinder on a mortise lock is recessed into the door body itself, meaning extraction requires reaching into a confined channel without disturbing the case mechanism behind it.
